The Marlborough Emergency Response Team (NZ-RT20) requires well-maintained equipment to support its work in the Marlborough community and beyond. This role helps keep our equipment checked, maintained, organised, safe and ready for training and emergency response.
This is a non-operational volunteer role for someone who enjoys practical tasks, looking after equipment and keeping things in order. You do not need to be a rescue responder or a qualified mechanic. Being reliable, willing to learn and comfortable asking for help is what matters.
You will work alongside other volunteer team members and council staff. Equipment readiness is a shared responsibility, not yours alone.
What you will do:
We will agree on manageable tasks that suit your interests, skills and availability. These may include:
• Checking equipment and supplies: Follow checklists to identify damage, missing items and supplies nearing their expiry dates.
• Keeping equipment ready: Charge radios, GPS units, lights and power-tool batteries, and help clean, check and repack gear after use.
• Basic equipment care: Carry out routine checks, refuelling and basic maintenance of equipment such as generators, tools and lighting equipment, where trained and authorised.
• Keeping things organised: Check vehicle and trailer kits, keep stores tidy and labelled, and manage new inventory.
• Keeping records up to date: Help us move away from paper forms and clipboards towards simple digital equipment records, with guidance provided.
• Following up on faults and servicing: Report and label faulty and worn equipment, follow the process for keeping it out of use, and help council staff track vehicle servicing, warrants of fitness and weighbridge checks where required.
• Support before and after team deployment: By arrangement, help prepare and pack equipment before a deployment, and clean, check and restock it when the team returns.
You will not be expected to attend call-outs, be on call, undertake specialist repairs or decide on your own whether damaged equipment is safe.
What you bring:
• A practical approach and an interest in looking after equipment.
• Reliability, able to commit to regular help and scheduled gear checks.
• Willingness to follow processes and checklists, work safely and use simple digital tools to keep records, with support provided.
• No formal qualifications are required. Relevant experience is welcome, but not essential.
A Ministry of Justice background check is required for this role.
You will have designated contacts in the team, clear task guidance and training for agreed duties.
The role is expected to take a few hours each month, during working hours, 8 am–5 pm, Mon-Fri, or weekends by prior arrangement. Any extra help before or after a deployment would be discussed at the time.
We welcome long term involvement with our team, starting with a settling in period to make sure the role is a fit for both parties.
