Keeping Your Volunteers Safe

Keeping Your Volunteers Safe

At Volunteer Marlborough, we believe that the safety and wellbeing of all volunteers is essential. Both volunteers and the organisations they serve must take all practical steps to ensure safe working environments.

Your Responsibilities Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 (HSWA): Organisations classified as a 'Person Conducting a Business or Undertaking' (PCBU), including not-for-profit organisations with employees, must ensure the health and safety of all workers -- including volunteer workers -- and anyone on-site.

Key Duties Include:

  • Providing a safe and risk-free work environment
  • Ensuring safe equipment, structures, and systems
  • Managing the safe use and storage of tools and substances
  • Offering adequate welfare facilities
  • Providing necessary information, training, and supervision
  • Monitoring worker health and workplace risks

Volunteers deserve the same level of protection as paid workers. We urge all member organisations to stay up-to-date with health and safety policies, procedures, and reporting.
