Support Volunteer - Migrants
A Support Volunteer for Migrants supports a new migrant volunteer to settle into a role, feel included, and understand how things work in a typical Kiwi volunteer setting. Support is often short-term while someone gains confidence, but can be longer if needed.
As a Support Volunteer for Migrants, you may:
- Meet the volunteer and accompany them to their first few sessions
- Help them understand the role expectations, routines, and 'unwritten rules' (e.g. who to ask, how breaks work, what to wear)
- Support simple communication with the organisation (without speaking FOR the person)
- Help build confidence using encouragement and friendly check-ins
- Help the volunteer practice everyday volunteering language (where appropriate)
- Let Volunteer Marlborough know if additional support or adjustments could help
What you won't be expected to do:
- Provide immigration advice, legal advice, or social work support
- Interpret complex conversations or documents (unless you're specifically matched as a language support person and are comfortable doing so)
- Take responsibility for transport, money, or personal matters
Volunteer Marlborough will provide:
- Matching and a clear role briefing
- Tips on communicating across language / culture differences
- Regular check-ins and support if challenges arise
Reference checks will be done
Requirements:
You might be a great fit if you:
- Are friendly, welcoming, and culturally respectful
- Communicate clearly and patiently (especially when English is developing)
- Enjoy helping people feel included and confident
- Can follow boundaries and keep things professional
- Have an interest in multicultural community connection
If you speak another language, awesome! But it's not a requirement.
A Ministry of Justice background check is required for this role.
