Support Volunteer - Health Conditions & Disabilities
Support Volunteers can help remove barriers so people can participate, contribute, and thrive in a role that suits their interests and strengths.
As a Support Volunteer, you may:
- Accompany someone to their volunteer role and help them feel comfortable in a new environment
- Help with introductions, routines, communication, and understanding expectations
- Offer gentle encouragement and emotional support (for example, anxiety or confidence)
- Assist with practical problem-solving if barriers arise (e.g. transport planning, sensory overwhelm, unclear instructions)
- Communicate with Volunteer Marlborough if anything isn't working well
- Step back over time (for certain people) if the person becomes confident and independent (this is a great outcome!)
What you won't be expected to do:
- Provide medical care, personal cares, or therapy
- Act as a counsellor or crisis responder
- Do the role FOR the client. Your role is to support THEIR participation
Requirements:

- A good communicator who can follow guidance and keep information confidential
- Reliable. Consistency matters in support roles.

You will be supported by Volunteer Marlborough through:
- A match process based on interests, availability, and support needs
- An induction / briefing before you start
- Ongoing check-ins and a clear point of contact
Reference checks will be done
A Ministry of Justice background check is required for this role.
Time commitment:
Flexible.
Typically 2-3 hours per week but depends on role.
Matches could be short-term (2 to 6 weeks) to help someone settle in OR ongoing as a regular arrangement
