Recruitment & Onboarding
• Recruit volunteers against identified needs, including aviary/bird care, education, events, fundraising, and administration.
• Run a consistent onboarding process — inductions, role briefings, health and safety orientation, and relevant agreements/records.
• Maintain accurate volunteer records, including contact details, roles, hours, skills, and training.
Scheduling & Coordination
• Coordinate volunteer rosters to ensure reliable cover for bird care, centre operations, tours, and events.
• Match volunteer skills and availability to tasks, and arrange cover for absences.
• Act as the first point of contact for volunteer queries, scheduling changes, and day-to-day coordination.
Support & Retention
• Build a positive, inclusive volunteer culture that reflects the Trust's kaupapa and values.
• Provide ongoing support, recognition, and development opportunities for volunteers.
• Identify and address volunteer wellbeing, workload, and training needs.
Working With the Paid Team
• Work closely with the Manager and Education & Administration Coordinator to align volunteer effort with operational priorities.
• Support health, safety, and animal welfare standards across volunteer activities, in line with Trust and DOC requirements.
• Report regularly to the Manager on volunteer numbers, activity, and any issues or opportunities.

Requirements:

• Proven experience managing or coordinating volunteers — essential.
• Confident building systems for recruitment, onboarding, scheduling, and record-keeping.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a warm, inclusive approach.
• Well organised, with attention to detail and the ability to juggle competing priorities.
• Confidence with digital tools — spreadsheets, shared drives, email, and volunteer scheduling platforms.
• Understanding of health and safety obligations in a volunteer/not-for-profit context (desirable).
• Alignment with our conservation kaupapa and commitment to te ao Māori principles where relevant.

Time commitment:

Approximately 8–10 hours per week, with flexibility around days and times. Some regular on-site presence at Fairhall is expected, plus occasional weekends for events, releases, and the breeding/advocacy season (approximately February–May).
