Join our small but passionate team at the Kārearea Falcon Trust to help with morning butchery tasks - gutting and preparing meat/small game animals into portions the right size for kārearea (New Zealand falcons).
The kārearea is a taonga (treasured) species unique to New Zealand and found nowhere else in the world. Unfortunately, there are less than 8000 kārearea left, making them rarer than some species of kiwi! We work tirelessly to rescue, rehabilitate, and breed-for-release kārearea in order to boost wild populations and help ensure a thriving future for them. We currently have 18 kārearea in our care at the centre who require specialist carnivorous diets for their health and wellbeing.
Local hunters generously supply us with meat suitable for falcons including: rabbit, hare, ducks, pūkeko, geese, swans, quail, and pheasants.
We are looking to grow our small team of volunteer butchers that can safely prepare food for the falcons on weekday mornings.
Tasks will include:
Prior experience with knife safety, butchery, and food hygiene is extremely advantageous.
However, full training will be given so the less experienced are welcome to apply.... provided you are not squeamish!
As a charity we rely on volunteers, grants, donations, sponsorship and the community to help support our work restoring wild kārearea.
Thank you for taking the time to review our volunteer opportunity and we hope to receive your application soon.
