In the heart of Picton, amidst the whispering trees and the gentle babble of the dawn chorus, a dedicated group of volunteers has been quietly making a monumental difference. This month, we celebrate not just one individual, but the collective spirit of teamwork and dedication that defines the volunteers at Picton Dawn Chorus.

Led by their passion for conservation and a deep love for the environment, this diverse group of volunteers has been instrumental in preserving and enhancing the natural beauty of Picton, and Marlborough as a whole. Whether it's braving the early morning chill to monitor trap lines or painstakingly restoring native habitats, each member brings a unique skill and boundless enthusiasm to the table.

Take Dave, for example, who works hard to bring bird song back to Picton through his work checking trap lines, making traps, and establishing and creating a database and group to plant trees specific to Marlborough. His extremely knowledgeable input to planting with a view to feeding native bird species directly impact the Picton environment, enhancing our region for future generations.

Then there's Sue & Mark, volunteer trappers who check the trap lines on a weekly basis. Sue is also part of the Urban Trapping Group, encouraging back yard trapping, while Mark spends considerable time making traps for the lines and for sale to raise funds to support projects. Jen Dunlop (Volunteer Coordinator for Picton Dawn Chorus), says, "what really stands out about Sue & Mark is their ongoing energy and constant positivity. They are always there to support and have been absolute superstars!"

Let's not forget the volunteers who give their time to work in the shop. We spoke to Cherie (shop assistant) and Ali (shop coordinator) whose work is no less important than those out doing the trapping and monitoring. As they keep the shop looking amazing, educate customers, train other volunteers, and welcome huge crowds from the visiting cruise ships, they and the other volunteers keep smiles on their faces and have a good time with their work.

"It's good to have people in the shop. The shop makes the money to fund projects," says Cherie.

Jen went on to say, "Everyone is working towards the big picture of protecting the flora and manu."

The wider volunteer team is filled with infectious enthusiasm and encyclopedic knowledge, diligently raising the public's awareness about local conservation issues and inspiring support from the surrounding community. Together, these volunteers embody the true spirit of teamwork and dedication. They show up, rain or shine, ready to lend a hand and make a positive impact on their environment. Their collective efforts have not only enriched the biodiversity of the Picton area but have also fostered a sense of camaraderie and purpose among all who join them.

As we honour the Picton Dawn Chorus Volunteer Team this month, we celebrate their unwavering commitment to conservation, their passion for education, and their ability to inspire positive change. They are a shining example of what can be achieved when individuals come together for a common cause - a chorus of voices united in harmony for the love of nature.
