We're proud to recognise Jess Halverson as our Volunteer of the Month for September, for her dedicated service at the Salvation Army Family Store. Jess has been a vital part of the team for an impressive 12 years, and her commitment to helping others truly shines through in everything she does.

Jess's volunteer work involves sorting and pricing clothing, vacuuming the shops, and caring for the plants outside the store. She is known for her welcoming nature, always ready to help customers find what they need, and for her willingness to go the extra mile for the community. Jess's cheerful attitude and strong people skills have made her a favourite among both customers and fellow volunteers.

"I started volunteering to get out of the house and do something good." Jess shared in a recent chat with our team. "Occasionally, you get a shout-out from the boss, and that feels pretty nice too!" The sense of community and connection Jess has found through volunteering is something she values deeply. While the store discounts are a nice perk, it's the friendships she's formed over the years that truly keep her coming back week after week.

Jess's dedication is even more remarkable given the challenges she faces. Living with a disability hasn't stopped her from showing up twice a week, year after year, to lend a hand and make a difference. Her determination serves as an inspiring reminder that everyone has something valuable to contribute, regardless of the obstacles they may face.

Beyond her work at the Family Store, Jess leads a full and active life. She enjoys playing golf, baking, and spending time with her beloved dog. She also works at OSCARS childcare, where her caring nature undoubtedly makes a positive impact on young lives.

The Salvation Army Family Store is more than just a thrift store. It's a place where household goods, clothing, and furniture are given new life, and the proceeds support the Salvation Army's essential community services. Jess's role in the shop is integral to these efforts, helping make a difference in the lives of many local families.

Thank you, Jess, for your unwavering commitment to helping others and for embodying the spirit of volunteering. Your contributions are truly appreciated, and we're grateful to have you out there doing the mahi!
