Volunteer Marlborough is delighted to recognise Les Rockliff as our Volunteer of the Month for November 2024!

At 79 years old, Les is the oldest and one of the most dedicated volunteers at the Kārearea Falcon Trust, a local organisation committed to protecting New Zealand's falcon, the kārearea, and promoting conservation of native wildlife.

A Legacy of Dedication

Les's journey with the Kārearea Falcon Trust began over a decade ago when, as an employee of Brancott Estate, he was tasked with helping clear and tidy the grounds in preparation for the aviary's construction. After retiring more than five years ago, Les returned to the trust at the request of Chairman Andy Frost, and has been a pillar of support ever since.

Today, Les spends approximately 16 hours each month maintaining the trust's grounds, contributing to both its aesthetic and ecological appeal. From mowing lawns with a push mower to tending roses, trimming hedges, and tackling odd repair jobs, Les's contributions are as impressive as they are invaluable.

Holly Turner, the trust's Manager, shared her admiration for Les's efforts:

"Les is a fascinating fellow who always has a good yarn up his sleeve! Not only does he keep the grounds beautiful for human visitors, but he's also created a haven for wildlife. Kingfishers, grey warblers, bellbirds, fantails, and silvereyes are regular visitors thanks to Les's care for the plants and landscape."

Finding Purpose in Volunteering

For Les, volunteering at the Kārearea Falcon Trust isn't just about maintaining the grounds; it's about staying active, contributing to a cause he cares deeply about, and finding purpose in his day. As Les himself says:

"When you get to my age, you need a reason to get up. The lawns need mowing!"

The social interaction with staff and volunteers at the trust is another highlight for Les. He enjoys sharing stories over tea and biscuits and appreciates the peaceful, welcoming environment. Les acknowledges that, at 79, his time as a volunteer may be winding down. However, his legacy of dedication and commitment will undoubtedly inspire others to carry on the mahi he holds dear.

About the Kārearea Falcon Trust

The Kārearea Falcon Trust is a conservation organisation dedicated to protecting New Zealand's falcons (kārearea), one of Aotearoa's most iconic and endangered birds of prey. The trust works to educate the public, rehabilitate injured birds, and conserve habitats to ensure the survival of these magnificent raptors. Volunteers like Les are crucial to the trust's efforts, helping maintain the facilities and grounds that support the mission.

Why Les Stands Out

Les's positive attitude, reliability, and 'nothing is a problem' approach make him an exemplary volunteer. Even after a recent health setback, Les returned to his role eager to contribute, demonstrating his unwavering commitment.

Les sums up the rewards of volunteering perfectly:

"It's rewarding and self-satisfying. And you've done something for the day!"

A Message of Gratitude

The Kārearea Falcon Trust and Volunteer Marlborough are deeply grateful for Les's years of dedication. His efforts have not only helped preserve a vital community resource but have also inspired those around him. Les's hard work ensure that the trust's grounds remain a place of beauty, peace, and conservation.

Congratulations Les, and thank you for everything you do!
