Volunteer of the Month - May

30 June 2024 | News

The Volunteer of the Month Award for May 2024 was awarded to Raewyn Rice.

Raewyn is a dedicated Kea leader for the Churchward Park Scouts and we recognise her exceptional commitment and tireless efforts in supporting the local scouting community, providing adventurous outdoor education programmes to the youth of Marlborough.

In the time since Raewyn's journey with Churchward Park Scouts began, she has become an invaluable asset to the organisation. As a Kea leader, she works with the youngest members of the Scouting movement, aged 5-7 years, introducing them to the joys of scouting through engaging activities, adventures, and life lessons.

Her approach to leadership is marked by enthusiasm, patience, and creativity. Raewyn is known for her ability to inspire and motivate young Keas, fostering a sense of community, teamwork, and self-confidence among the children. Her dedication goes beyond the weekly meetings; she often spends countless hours planning activities, gathering materials, organising events, and ensuring that each child has a memorable and enriching experience. Outside of the time spent leading children in fun activities, Raewyn also spends numerous hours communicating and working with the parents, planning camps, attending Group Committee meetings, and ensuring financial sustainability for the section.

Although Raewyn's own children have now moved on to the next scouting section, she continues to volunteer her time with the Keas. Other Scouting leaders and parents alike have commended Raewyn for her unwavering commitment.

"Raewyn has a unique ability to connect with the children and make each activity fun and educational. She truly cares about their growth and development and it shows in everything she does", says one parent.

Volunteer Marlborough's recognition of Raewyn's efforts highlights the importance of volunteers in our community. Volunteers like Raewyn are the backbone of many organisations, providing essential services and support that help shape the future of our young people.

When asked about her experience as a volunteer, Raewyn shared, "I've volunteered my whole life. When I was young I did Scouts and always said when my kids get involved, I'd get involved and help. My own dad was a volunteer too and told me, 'you get out of it what you put into it'. Scouting really improves the community. Young kids are aware of the world around them and how they can help to make the community better through our activities, guest speakers, and learning we do out in the community on our outings."

When Raewyn is not giving her time to the Churchward Park Scouts, she is enjoying her life as a mum and business owner. Raewyn's dedication to the Churchward Park Scouts exemplifies the spirit of volunteerism. We asked her what she might say to someone who is thinking about starting their own volunteer journey - "Go for it! It's really rewarding. You absolutely get so much out of it, so just do it! Volunteering is overlooked by a lot of people but if you want something, you get it done."

Volunteer Marlborough is delighted to celebrate Raewyn and her contributions. We hope her story will inspire others to make a difference in the community.
