Governance Series - Session 9: Board Recruitment and Succession Planning

Many volunteer board members step into governance roles because they care about their community — not because they’ve had formal training in governance, compliance, or financial oversight.

This 12-session series is designed to support volunteer board members to feel more confident, capable, and clear in their role.
Building Governance Confidence is a practical, discussion-based programme that strengthens governance capability while reducing risk for both individuals and organisations.

Session 9: Board Recruitment and Succession Planning
Strong boards do not happen by chance — they are built intentionally over time. This session explores how to bring the right people onto the board, with a focus on identifying the skills, perspectives, and attributes your organisation needs both now and into the future.

We’ll look at the importance of induction and onboarding, and how to set new board members up well so they can contribute with confidence from the start. Good recruitment is only part of the picture — strong boards also think ahead about continuity, leadership transitions, and how knowledge is passed on over time.

The session will also cover succession planning, including how to plan for turnover, avoid gaps in capability, and reduce reliance on “the same few people” carrying the load year after year. A practical session for boards and committees wanting to strengthen resilience, sustainability, and fresh thinking around the board table.
