Many volunteer board members step into governance roles because they care about their community — not because they’ve had formal training in governance, compliance, or financial oversight.
This 12-session series is designed to support volunteer board members to feel more confident, capable, and clear in their role.
Building Governance Confidence is a practical, discussion-based programme that strengthens governance capability while reducing risk for both individuals and organisations.
Session 8: People, Culture and the Board’s HR Role
Boards do not manage staff day to day — but they do play a vital role in shaping the culture, expectations, and accountability of an organisation. This session explores the board’s responsibility for organisational culture, and how good governance helps create environments where people can contribute well, relationships are healthy, and values are reflected in practice.
We’ll look at the line between governance and management in people matters, including what boards should be paying attention to and where they need to avoid stepping into operational territory. We’ll also cover the importance of setting clear expectations for behaviour and performance, using tools such as codes of conduct and strong role clarity to support good practice.
The session will also unpack what boards must not delegate, and why early intervention matters when people issues begin to pose governance risks. A practical and thought-provoking session for board and committee members wanting to better understand their role in supporting healthy culture, strong leadership, and sound oversight.
