Many volunteer board members step into governance roles because they care about their community — not because they’ve had formal training in governance, compliance, or financial oversight.
This 12-session series is designed to support volunteer board members to feel more confident, capable, and clear in their role.
Building Governance Confidence is a practical, discussion-based programme that strengthens governance capability while reducing risk for both individuals and organisations.
Session 7: Having the Tough Conversations
Good governance is not just about policies, plans, and financials — it is also about how people communicate when things get difficult. This session explores how boards and committees can navigate disagreement, tension, and conflict at the board table in a way that is constructive, respectful, and focused on the good of the organisation.
We’ll look at how to give and receive feedback well, manage sensitive issues with clarity and professionalism, and create space for honest discussion without damaging relationships. Strong boards are not those that avoid hard conversations — they are the ones that know how to have them well.
We’ll also explore the importance of speaking up when something doesn’t feel right, and how board members can raise concerns in a way that supports accountability, trust, and sound decision-making. A valuable session for anyone wanting to build healthier board dynamics and greater confidence in challenging conversations.
