Governance Series - Session 6: Risk, Compliance and Legal Essentials

Many volunteer board members step into governance roles because they care about their community — not because they’ve had formal training in governance, compliance, or financial oversight.

This 12-session series is designed to support volunteer board members to feel more confident, capable, and clear in their role.
Building Governance Confidence is a practical, discussion-based programme that strengthens governance capability while reducing risk for both individuals and organisations.

Session 6: Risk, Compliance and Legal Essentials
Led by a lawyer in each region, this session will help board and committee members better understand the legal and compliance responsibilities that come with governance. We’ll explore some of the common risks faced by not-for-profit boards, and what board members need to know to help protect both their organisation and the people connected to it.

Topics will include board responsibilities around health and safety, privacy, safeguarding, and cyber risk, with a focus on what good oversight looks like in practice. Rather than getting lost in legal jargon, this session is designed to make compliance more understandable, manageable, and relevant to real governance situations.

We’ll also cover practical tools for identifying, assessing, and monitoring risk, helping boards take a more proactive approach without becoming overwhelmed. A valuable session for anyone wanting more confidence in the legal and risk side of governance, and a clearer understanding of what boards need to keep an eye on.
