Many volunteer board members step into governance roles because they care about their community — not because they’ve had formal training in governance, compliance, or financial oversight.
This 12-session series is designed to support volunteer board members to feel more confident, capable, and clear in their role.
Building Governance Confidence is a practical, discussion-based programme that strengthens governance capability while reducing risk for both individuals and organisations.
Session 5: Strategy – Keeping Boards Focused on What Matters
A good strategic plan should do more than look impressive — it should help guide decisions, priorities, and direction. This session explores what a strategic plan actually is, what it is not, and why it matters for effective governance.
We’ll look at the board’s role in setting and maintaining the organisation’s direction, and how boards can keep strategy connected to real-world decisions rather than treating it as a one-off exercise. Participants will gain a clearer understanding of how strategy supports focus, accountability, and long-term thinking.
We’ll also explore how to keep strategy practical, relevant, and alive, and how to avoid the all-too-common trap of creating a plan that simply sits on a shelf. A valuable session for boards and committees wanting to lead with purpose and keep attention on what matters most.
