Governance Series - Session 2: Understanding Key Documents

Many volunteer board members step into governance roles because they care about their community — not because they’ve had formal training in governance, compliance, or financial oversight.

This 12-session series is designed to support volunteer board members to feel more confident, capable, and clear in their role.
Building Governance Confidence is a practical, discussion-based programme that strengthens governance capability while reducing risk for both individuals and organisations.

Session 2: Understanding Key Documents
Good governance relies on more than good intentions — it also depends on having the right documents in place, and knowing how to use them. This session will introduce the key governance documents that help shape and support an organisation, including constitutions, trust deeds, rules, strategy and planning documents, board and officer role descriptions, and core governance policies.

We’ll explore what these documents are for, why they matter, and what board members should expect to see as part of their role. Participants will gain a clearer understanding of how these documents guide decision-making, clarify responsibilities, and help keep organisations focused, accountable, and well run.

The session will also cover how to review governance documents, recognise when they may need updating, and ensure they remain fit for purpose as the organisation grows or changes. A practical session for anyone wanting to feel more confident about the paperwork and frameworks that underpin effective governance.
