Governance Series - Session 11: Understanding Funding, Accountability, and Board Decision-Making

Many volunteer board members step into governance roles because they care about their community — not because they’ve had formal training in governance, compliance, or financial oversight.

This 12-session series is designed to support volunteer board members to feel more confident, capable, and clear in their role.
Building Governance Confidence is a practical, discussion-based programme that strengthens governance capability while reducing risk for both individuals and organisations.

Session 11: Understanding Funding, Accountability, and Board Decision-Making
Funding is a critical part of not-for-profit sustainability — and boards need to understand the environment they are operating in. This session explores how the funding landscape works, why it is becoming increasingly competitive, and what boards need to know to make informed, realistic decisions about resourcing and organisational priorities.

We’ll look at the different types of funding available, what they can and cannot be used for, and the responsibilities boards carry when making decisions tied to funding opportunities, obligations, and risk. Participants will also gain a clearer understanding of funder expectations, reporting requirements, and the common risks funders see in community organisations.

The session will also focus on how boards can use funding knowledge to set priorities, allocate resources wisely, and ask better questions of management about funding effort, risk, and return. We’ll explore how boards can support fundraising and advocacy in a way that strengthens the organisation without placing unrealistic pressure on staff. A practical and timely session for boards and committees wanting to lead with greater awareness, accountability, and strategic thinking.
