Many volunteer board members step into governance roles because they care about their community — not because they’ve had formal training in governance, compliance, or financial oversight.
This 12-session series is designed to support volunteer board members to feel more confident, capable, and clear in their role.
Building Governance Confidence is a practical, discussion-based programme that strengthens governance capability while reducing risk for both individuals and organisations.
Session 1: Governance 101
Whether you’re new to governance or want to build a stronger foundation, this session will unpack the essentials of what boards are — and what they are not. We’ll explore the role of boards and committees as decision-making bodies with real authority and accountability, rather than advisory groups, and look at what that means in practice.
The session will cover what a board or committee is actually responsible for, including its role in setting direction, overseeing the organisation, and ensuring accountability. We’ll also look at the difference between governance and management, helping participants understand where the line sits between strategic leadership and day-to-day operations.
We’ll touch on the legal duties and responsibilities of board members in the New Zealand context, as well as the areas in which board members may be personally accountable. This session is designed to give participants a clear, practical overview of governance fundamentals and help them feel more confident about their role around the board table.
