Governance Series - Season 4: Board Roles, Skills, and How Meetings Actually Work

Many volunteer board members step into governance roles because they care about their community — not because they’ve had formal training in governance, compliance, or financial oversight.

This 12-session series is designed to support volunteer board members to feel more confident, capable, and clear in their role.
Building Governance Confidence is a practical, discussion-based programme that strengthens governance capability while reducing risk for both individuals and organisations.

Session 4: Board Roles, Skills and How Meetings Actually Work
Strong boards don’t happen by accident — they’re built through clarity, capability, and effective teamwork. This session explores the common roles found around the board table, the expectations that come with them, and how each member contributes to good governance.

We’ll look at how to build and use a simple skills matrix to identify strengths, gaps, and opportunities for board development. This can help boards think more strategically about recruitment, succession, and making the most of the skills already around the table.

The session will also cover the practical side of governance: how to run effective meetings, use agendas and minutes well, and support clear, sound decision-making. We’ll also explore what it means to work as a governance team rather than as individuals, helping boards build stronger collective responsibility, better discussions, and more effective leadership.
