St John Youth Leader

The Youth Leader role within St John Youth is a step up from the Divisional Aide role (https://volunteermarlborough.org.nz/volunteer/positions/1309/st-john-youth-divisional-aide).

Youth Leaders form part of the Divisional Leadership Team within St John Youth Divisions, and can either have come up from the Cadet ranks or be Direct Entry as 18+ adults.

Youth Leaders come from all walks life and vocations. For example, in our Blenheim Youth Division, we have Leaders who are Parents, Emergency Medical Technicians, and a Student Teacher.

Youth Leaders are a uniformed role (supplied) and assist the running of the Youth Division, in teaching and administration roles, reporting to the Divisional Manager.

Youth Leaders are not required to be subject matter experts in all subjects, as resources are readily available. If leaders have a particular interest in various subjects offered, or have a background in subjects, e.g. first aid, caregiving, maoritanga, environment etc, leaders are encouraged to provide input and share their knowledge.

Youth Leaders need to have a passion for working with youth, and have empathy, compassion and patience, as our Cadet age group ranges from 6-18 years of age.

Youth Leaders have the option to be able to advance within the Youth programme, through a number of management levels, including Assistant Divisional Manager, Divisional Manager, Area Youth Manager, District Youth Manager, Regional Youth Manager, and up to National Youth Manager.

No experience in St John is necessary, as coaching and a mentor will be provided as necessary.

We are seeking new Youth Leaders so we can share the workload and attract and recruit new cadets.

Requirements:

First Aid Certificate - if not current, or you do not have one, this will be arranged by St John (at no cost to you) once you have been appointed as Youth Leader.
Volunteers need to be 18+ for this role.

Volunteer youth leaders will need to complete an online application process, including references, and undergo an interview. The next step will be to complete the St John Youth Child Protection Policy (CPP) online training module, once appointed as Youth Leader.

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment:

1.5 - 2hrs on a Division night (1 night per week during school term)
Time as required for administration / planning / behind the scenes work
Occasional weekends, for District Competitions / Regional Camps / other activities (e.g. fundraising).
