We recognise that family carers, especially mums, of people with intellectual disabilities often feel isolated in their community, often don’t have the same opportunity to socialise or maintain relationships as others. We would like to help with that. By providing a listening ear and a friend to chat to regularly, you can feel proud that you will have a positive impact in the life of a mum who cares for a child with intellectual disability. By taking a moment to connect, you can make a positive change in their life and gain a new friend in the process. We match you with someone with similar interests as you, so that you can develop a genuine friendship. You might like cooking, walking in the bush, painting, or Netflix movies and this may give you a common interest to talk about together. The relationship is one to one. This means you spend time speaking to only one person, so you both get to know each other. Together you decide how often you are in contact, there is flexibility and it is not time specific. This is an online programme that provides friendship and connection to people no matter where they live in New Zealand. Volunteers are provided with full orientation and receive ongoing support from one of our volunteer coordinators. We welcome applicants over the age of 17 to apply.
The number of hours is decided by the volunteer and their friend. It is flexible, but we recommend one hour per week.
The first step is to express your interest by filling out the form below. We will then put you in touch directly with the organisation for more information on the role and how to proceed.
