Walking Group Organiser (and/or Helper)

We are looking for a friendly and kind person to organise and coordinate a walking group for people in Marlborough who are blind or partially sighted. This role will involve organising locations and walking routes, coordinating attendees (and potentially arranging transport), and then guiding the attendees.
The walking group will consist of up to 6 people (and maybe more after the group is well established) with varying degrees of vision loss. A second volunteer will be present for the walks to assist with guiding attendees as they need it.
This would be a great role for a pair of friends, parent-child duo, or a couple who would like to help out together.

The walking group will get together once per month to start, with the possibility of meeting more often once well established.

You will be well suited to this role if you:

  • have strong organisational skills,
  • are friendly and enjoy meeting and getting to know new people
  • can communicate with people in an appropriate and empathetic manner,
  • have your own transport (petrol reimbursement option available)
  • have a helpful and supportive attitude
  • have a first aid certificate and/or you are prepared to attend a course

Previous experience working with people who have vision loss is not necessary but will be helpful.

Full training, a health and safety induction, and ongoing support will be provided by Blind and Low Vision NZ. Posters and other promotional material can be provided by Blind and Low Vision NZ.

If this opportunity sounds like it suits you, simply fill out the form below and click 'apply'. Your name and contact details will be automatically sent to the volunteer coordinator, and you will receive an email with their contact details.
