This position is a bit like being a virtual tutor. Literacy coaches help people from all around New Zealand to learn to read and write via video conference (Zoom, Google Meet or Skype) and email.
We have found that, without someone to help them, the learners intend to practice - but do not. As a literacy coach, you will encourage a learner to help them practice their reading, writing and spelling. You will also work with your learner to create an individualised plan to meet their needs.
Literacy coaching is all about developing goals and selecting materials and activities to help them reach those goals.
This role can be done from home or anywhere you have internet access!
Literacy coaching is a very important service! You can change a learner's life... and that of their family!
Full training and support will be given.
If you are interested in becoming a literacy coach with the Rural Youth and Adult Literacy Trust (RYALT), you will need to be fluent in English, be confident with the use of video-conferencing, email, and other basic computer programs, strong reading and writing abilities, and a friendly personality. You MUST also have access to a computer and the internet.
Note: Applicants must be at least 16 years old to apply.
🟡 Volunteers are not required to be vaccinated for this role.
This volunteer role offers flexibility but is more suited to a long term commitment and therefore not suitable for people who are looking for employment. However, we do have various short term roles available.
